MELE brings out west through two events

Two people sitting at computerIn mid-September movie buffs were invited to take in a film at the Regal Kapolei Commons 12 AND support the University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu Academy for Creative Media (UHWO-ACM) at the same time: half of all concession sales went to the program.

The event also commemorated the debut of a new movie trailer produced by a UHWO-ACM student and the movie complex’s ongoing support of UHWO.

A 90-second trailer, A Love Letter from the Ocean, explores the westside community’s appreciation for the ocean. Producer/director Ashley Guzman, a recent UHWO graduate was able to bring her vision to the screen with the help of Honolulu MELE alumni:

  • Janelle Saole, MELE music business alumna, now a UHWO Creative Media student, wrote the music for the trailer
  • Garrett McCaw, MELE audio engineering alumnus, worked on the Sound Design

Audio post-production was done at the MELE studios.

The following week MELE participated in the 4th Annual Ko Olina Children’s Festival. This annual event, a fundraiser for Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children (KMCWC), provides family-friendly fun via interactive video & music activities, live stage performances, movies by Disney-Pixar, and a sunset movie on the beach.

MELE participated in the music portion of the festival featuring instruments and recording equipment. Keiki and family sang along to their favorite Disney songs, produced their own beats and played DJ. MELE has been invited back to participate in next year’s event.

Check out highlights from the day here.

These are just two wonderful ways that Honolulu CCʻs MELE and its graduates are bringing music into our communities.
