KCCAFA: Pre-School Play Day

Donna Gutierrez, UH Foundation Director of Alumni Engagement – Community Colleges, and several members of Kapi‘olani Community College Alumni and Friends Association provided volunteer staff support at the Pre-School Play Day at Mānoa Elementary School on April 15.

This annual event is sponsored by the Department of Education and Head Start Programs, in cooperation with Special Olympics Hawai‘i.

Approximately 500 preschoolers with physical and learning challenges came from 35 Honolulu District schools to participate in more than 75 keiki-friendly sports activities. Energetic keiki, ranging from 3 to 5 years of age, laughed, huddled, cheered and patiently waited in lines to play different activities like a mini-gym workout, tennis challenge with sponge paddles, and crawling through a cardboard tunnel.

Every year, the theme of the event changes and this year’s theme was dinosaurs. Visualize a four-year-old hugging a fluffy and stuffed stegosaurus and you will see glee and feel the wonderment of a child enjoying childhood.

Gutierrez and KCCAFA members delighted in their childhood, too.
