Dr. John Burns is an associate professor of marine science at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. He graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa with a Ph.D. in Biology and went on to focus on the biology of coral. His research creates innovative tools to study the health and function of coral reef ecosystems throughout the Pacific.

He arrived at UH Hilo in 2018 and quickly merged the disciplines of marine science and data science to develop the Multiscale Environmental Graphical Analysis Laboratory or MEGA Lab based at UH Hilo. The MEGA Lab develops new technology that protects our ocean and provides it to communities who need it the most. They are leading a campaign to produce 3D maps of coral reefs worldwide and crafting media content to transform how society engages with science. Dr. Burns will be speaking about how technology and nature intersect and lead to new discoveries about coral reefs.
