UH Mānoa professor passes away

Frank Sanford Scott Jr. was born in Cody, WY on March 5, 1921, to Cora (Nipper) and Frank S. Scott Sr. He grew up on his family's homestead beside the Greybull River and graduated from Meeteetse High School in 1939. He went on to complete two years at the University of Wyoming, a BS at Oregon State, an MA in agricultural economics at Missouri State, and a PhD in agricultural and resource economics at Illinois State University. Scott held professorships at Stephen F. Austin University, the University of Illinois, the University of Nevada, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he taught from 1954 until his retirement in February 1994. He served as chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics from 1984 to 1986. Scott wrote numerous publications on marketing fruits, nuts and juices in Hawaiʻi, cattle production, and irrigation. He took several overseas research and advisory positions in Argentina (1960–1962, 1967–1969), Brazil (1965–1966), Costa Rica (1975), and Tehran, Iran (1971 and 1978).

Scott had three siblings: older brother Bob, younger brother Charles (both deceased) and younger sister Eileen. Growing up, he was responsible for the cattle and poultry on the home place, while his dad and brother worked at oil drilling and contract bridge building.  At age 11 he took over and modernized his mother's poultry operation, selling to stores in Meeteetse and Cody. He also maintained a one-acre vegetable garden.

Sergeant Scott served in the Army Air Corps as an instrument flying instructor from November 1943 to April 1946.

After his retirement Scott devoted much of his time to the tropical paradise he had created on his hillside in Lanikai, Hawaiʻi.  He fed the wild birds every morning and evening.  An avid reader, he studied subjects ranging from a comparison of the world's religions to politics, both Hawaiian and global.

Scott is survived by his daughter Terry (Teresa) Goodwin and her husband Daniel; grandchildren Brendan and Janie; sister Eileen Newcomb, nephews Ross Newcomb, Shane Scott (Denise) and Ron Scott (Casey), their children and grandchildren, and several close first cousins.

Scott was laid to rest in Meeteetse, Wyoming on October 3, 2015.
