More on Dr. Minoru Tamashiro

In the mid ’80s Dr. Tamashiro developed and patented a physical termite barrier using crushed basaltic rock (Basaltic Termite Barrier or BTB). In April of 2017, BTB has been specified, in policy, by the U.S. Army in Hawai‘i for sustainment, restoration, renovation, modernization and military construction projects. The technology reduces termite damage and the need for chemical treatments, minimizing all associated costs to pest control and building repair. BTB is one of the most successful patents held by the university.

Dr. Tamashiro also established the Minoru Tamashiro Endowment for Entomology Scholarship.

“The Wisdom of Hawaii’s Elders” is a monthly series highlighting the lives of Hawai‘i’s exceptional elders.
