Remembering Gary O. Galiher

The University of Hawai‘i ‘ohana bids a final farewell and aloha to Gary O. Galiher, a proud and distinguished alumnus of the William S. Richardson School of Law and longtime supporter of the University of Hawai‘i.

Galiher was the founder and senior partner of Galiher DeRobertis Waxman, a law firm in Honolulu. He first began practicing law in 1977 and established his own law firm in 1978.

The law school’s 2007 Alumnus of the Year, Galiher won more than 50 jury verdicts and settled thousands of claims for clients diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases. He also helped secure a $1.38 billion settlement from the tobacco industry and $20 million settlement from five major oil companies for the State of Hawaiʻi.

In 2011, the University of Hawai‘i Alumni Association recognized Galiher as a Distinguished Alumni Award honoree for his many achievements and contributions to UH and the community. He established numerous scholarships for law students and supported the law school, Institute for Astronomy and the UH Cancer Center. Galiher has been recognized as one of Hawai‘i’s Best Lawyers in HONOLULU Magazine.

Galiher is remembered for his professional excellence and generosity, qualities that will live on through the lives he has impacted over his many years of service.
