An advocate for social justice and inclusion

Trisha KajimuraHonolulu-born-and-raised alumnus Trisha Kajimura (MA ’96, MPH ’11) has dedicated the past two decades to a career in human services.

“Public health helps us to focus on the root of the problem and addressing social determinants is core to public health. We have a responsibility to address injustice in its many forms—from participating in advocacy through providing services that engage people’s strengths,” says Kajimura. “My academic experience helps me to understand programs that I come across and also gives me a better understanding of some of the legislation that is proposed.”

Kajimura’s commitment to social justice specifically led her to a career in direct services and advocacy. Prior to leading Mental Health America of Hawai‘i, she served as the director of social policy at Catholic Charities Hawaii and HIV Care Services director at the Life Foundation.

Today, she is the executive director of Mental Health America of Hawai‘i (MHAH), an organization that promotes mental wellness through education, advocacy, and service.

“One in every five people experiences a mental health issue that interrupts their work or personal life,” says Kajimura. “Mental Health America of Hawaii staff partner with schools and other community groups to offer education and resources.”

“Early in my career, I learned that systems change requires two levels of effort,” remarked Kajimura. “First, it’s important to offer leadership experiences within your organization.  MHAH’s team strives to recognize and build on the talent of people with different work styles, skills and experience. Secondly, systems change happens when coalitions of organizations are committed to a common goal. Collaborative leadership learned at ‘home’ makes coalition building easier.”
