Queen Kapi‘olani: Her Life and Legacy

On March 7, 2018, Chancellor Helen Cox welcomed University of Hawai‘i alumni and guests to Kaua‘i Community College Fine Arts Auditorium for a special historical presentation.

Guests were transported to an era of Hawaiian royalty by Professor Colette Higgins, alumna from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Kapi‘olani Community College, history scholar and Windward CC dean of academic affairs as she enthusiastically shared her research on one of Hawai‘i’s beloved monarchs, Queen Julia Kapi‘olani. Higgins focused on the queen’s life and legacy including her visit to Kalaupapa, and what may have inspired her to open a hospital, as well as Higgins's sabbatical experience tracing the footsteps of Queen Kapi‘olani when she traveled to England as a guest at Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.

The presentation was organized through a partnership with Kaua‘i CC, UH Foundation, Kaua‘i Museum and the Kaua'i Historical Society.
