2013 Outstanding Community Service Award

The 2013 UH Alumni Association Outstanding Community Service Award was presented to Oceanic Time Warner Cable in appreciation of its outstanding support to the University of Hawai‘i during halftime of the Homecoming football game on October 26. UHAA President Patrick Oki and Executive Director Alvin Katahara presented the award to Oceanic Time Warner Cable Vice President of Operations Norman Santos and General Manager, Media Sales MaryAnn Sacharski. Also in attendance were Oceanic Directors Anne Butac (BBA ’79), Sandy Davis, Jon Eto (MBA ’99), Mitch Miyoshi (BSEE ’95), Marcia Taira, and Kiman Wong (BSEE ’79, MBA ’83).

Over the past several years, Oceanic has supported UH in various capacities including but not limited to the Shidler College of Business, College of Engineering, ‘Ahahui Koa Ānuenue, Nā Koa Football Club and UH Alumni Association.

The Stan Sheriff Center is now one of the only arenas in the nation to offer free WiFi service thanks to Oceanic’s installation of this technology. They partnered with UH to renovate the Ed Wong Room, creating a high-tech lounge for business and social events.

Oceanic also supports robotics education in Hawai‘i, inspiring K-12 students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

2013 Chapter of the Year Award

UHAA presented its 2013 Chapter of the Year Award to the UH Mānoa Nursing Alumni Association at the Wahine volleyball match on November 1. UHAA Executive Director Alvin Katahara presented the award and a chapter banner to Sally Ishikawa (BSN ’70, MPH ’90) and Lori Kaneshige (AS ’89, BSN ’91, MSN ’96), president and vice president of the UH Mānoa Nursing Alumni Association, and Dean Mary Boland of the UH Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene in recognition of the chapter’s outstanding support of UHAA’s mission and the University of Hawai‘i.

Established in 2012, the Nursing Alumni Association has shown tremendous growth over the past year in its activities towards giving back to the University of Hawai‘i and its students. The chapter strives to connect nursing alumni, foster networking, and support the UH Mānoa School of Nursing. The Nursing Alumni Association presents awards at the Nursing Recognition Ceremony each semester, and participates in mock interviews and community service projects with senior student nurses. Each year they host an annual homecoming event for nursing alumni honoring nursing graduates celebrating their 25th and 50th reunion.

2013 Partner of the Year Award

UHAA’s 2013 Partner of the Year Award was presented by UHAA President Patrick Oki to Panda Travel during the Wahine volleyball game on November 2. Charmaine Chan, Panda Travel director of business support, accepted the recognition for the company’s outstanding commitment to supporting UHAA’s mission to keep alumni connected and to promote and support the University of Hawai‘i.
