Some alumni remember UH Mānoa as the place where they discovered their calling in life, where they found a home away from home and where they made friends to last a lifetime. Some can remember the classes they took, activities they participated in or the campus hangouts they’d frequent as a student.
But for some lucky alumni, UH Mānoa is much more than a classroom, home away from home or hangout spot—UH Mānoa is the place where their love story began.

Olivia (BA '15) and Kody Afusia (BA '14)
Kody and I met in 2014 at UH. He was the starting center in the football team, and I was in the beach volleyball team. We met in the training room and have been together for six years now. We got married at Lanikuhonua in July 2019. We wanted to get married back where it all started. UH will always have a special place in our hearts.
Noemi Caacbay (BS '19) and Liam Tsamous (BS '21)
Long long loooong story short.. Liam and I met in August of 2017. I was a leader at Cru, an RIO on the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa campus.
One evening Liam attended Cru's first large group meeting and we both took notice of each other. Over time we discovered that we had similar passions of hiking, beaching, and most importantly, food! Liam was everything I prayed for in a spouse, and Liam felt deeply the same about me!
We started dating in October of 2017 and had shared tons of adventures and experiences since then. This past holiday season we got engaged and are getting married this summer!
Napela Shim (BA '16) and Garrett Scott
While working a summer job on the mainland, a coworker learned that I attended UHM. She asked if she could share my contact information with her best friend’s brother, who was moving to O‘ahu to coach as a Graduate Assistant under Head Football Coach Norm Chow. It wasn’t until the Spring of 2016 that Garrett and I were able to meet.
Having grown up in Iowa and Wisconsin, we thought connecting would be a good opportunity to make friends with a fellow midwesterner. We met, with the intention of being friends-only, but it turns out we were both blindsided by love at first sight. One date is all it took. Five years later, we are back in the Midwest but UHM will always hold a special place in our hearts.
