The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo presents a public lecture by Dr. Gavin Gillman on the legacy of noted soil scientist Dr. Goro Uehara on Wednesday, September 27 at 5:30 p.m. in UH Hilo’s University Classroom Building Room 100, and on Thursday, September 28 at 3 p.m. in the Kohala Institute at `Iole’s GRACE Center Dining Hall in Kapa`au.

Gillman’s presentation on “Dr. Goro Uehara: His Influence On Our Understanding of the Management of Soils in the Tropics” will highlight Uehara’s vision for sustainable and resilient soil management in the humid tropical climate developed during his 50-year career as a globally recognized professor of tropical soil science and agronomy. Uehara was born and raised in Hawi Camp 17 on the North Kohala coast and became a leading exponent of “highly-weathered” tropical/subtropical soils, particularly the mechanisms by which the soils can retain plant nutrients in the face of severe leaching under heavy rainfall conditions.

Gillman spent 10 years as a Senior Principal Research Scientist for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Canberra, Australia and now works as a private consultant in soil science.
