Road Warriors Tailgate: UH vs. Navy

Nearly 600 loyal UH fans journeyed from all over the U.S. to attend UHAA’s tailgate event and support the football team’s longest road trip of the year to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  With temperatures in the 30s by game time, fans came out in droves to eat, party and share their UH pride at one of the most spirited tailgate events in UHAA history.  Tailgaters enjoyed the East coast barbecue lunch, beer and wine, and the sounds of Aloha Boys, a local-style band originally from Hawai‘i.  More than 100 UH fans attended UHAA’s Rainbow Warrior Bash the night before at Hamburger Hamlet, a sports bar in Crystal City.  Aloha Boys performed at both events, accompanied by impromptu hula and dance.

More than 200 loyal UH football fans mingled with former UH football stars like Gary Allen and David Toloumu, enjoyed outstanding entertainment from world-class vocalist Lani Misalucha, and heard from Head Coach Norm Chow at UHAA’s Rainbow Warrior Bash on Friday, October 11.


Road Warriors Tailgate: UH vs. UNLV

More than 1,000 UH Rainbow Warrior football fans attended the tailgate party prior to the UH vs. UNLV football game. The tailgate was sponsored by The California Hotel and Casino and the Main Street Station Casino – the unofficial headquarters for Hawai‘i fans who traveled to Las Vegas to attend the game.

On Saturday, September 7, 2013, UHAA hosted the first away-game tailgate of the 2013 football season. Over 200 Rainbow Warrior fans attended the event held at LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University campus.


Season Opener UH vs. USC

The UH Rainbow Warriors hosted the USC Trojans in their 2013 season opener on August 29 at Aloha Stadium. Although the Trojans finished off the game with a 30-13 win, it was great to see Taylor Graham finish strong with a 60-yard touchdown pass.

The University of Hawai‘i was among 20 public land-grant universities to be featured in the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C., and UHAA helped with event logistics.

Life Member Event: Mele & Martinis

UHAA ‘Onipa‘a members enjoyed an evening of martinis and jazz as they learned about the Music & Entertainment Learning Experience (MELE) program at Honolulu Community College. Life members sat in on a recording session with special guest performers Aaron Salā, piano; Zanuck Lindsey, guitar; and Bruce Hamada, bass; and heard from Mele instructors and students.

The UHAA golf cart made the rounds at Aloha Stadium before the last homegame of the season. Pre-game hopes were high for a bowl-qualifying victory over former WAC rival Brigham Young University, but it was not to be. The Warriors lost 41-20, coming up short this season 6-7.

The 2011 Homecoming Fair on Oct. 21 was a bright spot for lots of fun activities, in spite of rainy weather. UHAA Executive Director Alvin Katahara took a few dunks for a good cause – and we're not talking basketball! The event provided a great opportunity for the UH Mānoa ‘ohana – including alumni, friends and families – to gather and celebrate the campus while supporting our athletic teams.


Golden Scholars – Class of ’61

Members of the University of Hawai'i's Class of 1961 gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation on Oct. 21 during UH Mānoa Homecoming week. The newest "Golden Scholars" were inducted into a special circle of alumni during a ceremony at the Orvis Auditorium Courtyard on the UH Mānoa campus.

The the official UHAA Golf Cart made its debut at UH Warriors football home games this season. The cart sporting a UHAA flag and an "H" flag can be easily spotted by tailgaters around Aloha Stadium. UHAA executive director Alvin Katahara and UH Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw will be cruising the parking lot looking for proud alumni tailgaters. If you see them – give a shout out and let them know you're an alum. There may be something in it for you!

UHAA honored its 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award honorees at a dinner and silent auction on May 12 at the Sheraton Waikiki. L. Tammy Duckworth BA '89, Gary Galiher JD '77, MEd '71 & Diane Ono JD '91, BA '73, AS '82, Richard Ha BBA '73, John T. Komeiji BEd '75 and Hing Leung Sham PhD '80 all received the award. The 2011 UH Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award honored the late Isabella Aiona Abbott, PhD, BA '41. Her daughter, Annie Foerster, accepted the award on her behalf.
